Just as the world is full of many different delicious foods & fascinating places, the world, likewise, is abundant with so many catchy styles of music. As a music student and professional musician, I have been fortunate enough to have played or been exposed to many of the styles to be found in this world. While I'm influenced more heavily by some styles, such as Jazz, R & B, and Caribbean, I still like to spice things up with some rock energy, funky bass lines or hip-hop inspired rhythms, for example.

There are those who might say we should categorize each genre of music, keeping each pure and separate, but there are too many great examples of powerful music, such as Jazz, Rock, & Blues. With so many of these styles to draw from out there, plus having played keyboards, trumpet, and bass professionally, and having to arrange songs of all genres for various types of ensembles, it's been a pleasure for me to integrate various influences as I write my music.

So, as you listen to Doug Gurwell's music, don't worry too much about what genre it is, sit back, and enjoy!

こんにちは、僕の音楽に興味を持っていただいて僕のサイトへ来てくださってありがとうございます。僕の曲はいろいろな楽しいリズムとリッチなハーモニー、そこからくるいろいろな雰囲気を持った親しみやすいメロディーという感じでしょうか、きっと楽しんで聴いていただけると思います。

世界中においしいものや素敵な風景が多くあるように、世の中には凄くいいなと思う音楽もたくさんあります。僕は、音大生の時もプロのミュージシャンになってからも様々なスタイルの音楽を演奏しているのですが、ほんとに幸せなことだと思っています。僕に大きな影響を与えてくれている音楽もたくさんあります。もちろんジャズ、R＆B、カリビアンもそのひとつです。ロックに感じるエネルギーやファンキーなベースライン、ヒップホップのリズムも好きなんですよね。

音楽はそれぞれのジャンルにわけられています。独特な特徴のある音楽、たとえばジャズ、ロック、そしてブルースなどです。このような素晴らしい音楽があることプラス、僕自身キーボード、トランペット、ベースもやることからジャンルを問わずいろいろなスタイルのアンサンブルのアレンジもしてきました。そしていま僕は、自分の音楽をほんとに楽しんで書いています。

The music for The Cookie Jar was written and produced by Los Angeles-based composer, Doug Gurwell; pianist, trumpet player, bassist & overall versatile musician. His wide range of experiences include engagements such as recording at CBS Studios( Radford St.) with Elmer Bernstein for movie tracks to rock & roll tracks with Great White & Jack Russell, as well as doing live & recorded TV programs. He has performed for shows featuring artists such as George Benson, the Wynans, & Tony Bennett, & at venues including Irvine Meadows, Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, Royce Hall (UCLA), The Roxy, Fox Studios in Century City, Warner Bros. Studios, Nickelodean Studios, Disney Studios, ABC & NBC in Burbank, CA., The Queen Mary in Long Beach & Disneyland. Doug is no stranger to the Hollywood scene, having done engagements featuring many well-known personalities, and has had the opportunity to converse with Ann Curry (NBC), Mel Gibson, Sally Fields, Maria Shriver, Brittany Spears, Peter Weller (Robocop), & Bill Walton, amongst others.

Some of Doug Gurwell's favorite musicians include: Marvin Gaye, Brenda Russell, Jeff Lorber, Eric Clapton, George Duke, Roy Hargrove, Victor Wooten & the Brecker Brothers. The music he composes is strongly rhythmic, yet allowing fluid melodies to flow on top. He enjoys combining R & B with a rock edge, especially exhibited by the guitar lines in many of the songs. Also, integrated into The Cookie Jar are elements of Latin, funk, island beat, & smooth jazz.

Musicians featured in The Cookie Jar are: Gary Ferguson (drums), Billy Trudel (vocals), Larry Giannacchini (guitar), Doug Gurwell (piano, trumpet, flugelhorn, bass, plus string & steel drum synth patches ). Mike Sutherland & Yoshi Gurwell co-produced the project. The entire CD was recorded in Redondo Beach CA, engineered by Mike Sutherland.

More Story About The Cookie Jar... By Yoshi Gurwell This album title, The Cookie Jar, came from, of course, an old-time jar for cookies. For many people, in many countries, a cookie is like an osenbei (baked rice snack) in Japan. So, for everybody, everywhere, there is a favorite thing for a snack. The title of this CD came about because Doug has loved cookies since he was a child. However, if you look at the CD cover, maybe you’ll even get another idea from it. Imagine a tropical seaside village, where there is a club with live music, and it’s the local’s favorite place. If it were called The Cookie Jar, it must have a great bakery and cool bands there! So, this is the reason for the title of this CD. Well, the kind of music you can hear on this CD, ranges from pop and R&B to very friendly jazz, with a touch of rock. Like the title, the tunes are fun, funky and friendly from the The Cookie Jar! When you listen to this CD, you might feel like listening to jazz more than before and will even have another image of jazz. Give it try! Here’s some songs I’d like to introduce from the CD: #1, Because You Love Me: This tune has a rock taste jazz. The guitar solo is really cool, too! #2, The Cookie Jar: Just like the title, delicious fresh-baked tune! Doug bakes very good cookies, too. It’s really funky jazz. #3, Go Your Own Way: Both melody and rhythm are pop and light. The words by Doug, too. This is a great story of a father and a son. When you hit the wall or need to decide about some big decision in your life, a father’s advice for the son, is to always trust your intuition and go your own way, the best way. You can enjoy Billy’s lively vocal and Doug’s joyful trumpet solo. #4, Flying: This tune has a latin taste jazz. Great drum beats, and a great riff by both trumpet and trombone. #7, The Long Road Home: Doug wrote this song for the people who have had a very sad events such places as New Orleans or Iraq. It’s hard to imagine how both the soldiers and civilians will be able to go home and put their lives back together. I’m sure you can feel something from the soulful melody. #9, Just Around The Corner: This is a love song and very important turning point in someone’s life. Someday, somewhere you meet someone very special, but we don’t know when nor how.......?! I introduced 6 songs of 12 from this CD. I hope you will understand about Doug’s sound and especially his great orchestration which seems simple, but the parts are really arranged . Once again, please give it a try!

By ヨシ・ガーウェル アルバムのタイトル名、”クッキー・ジャー”　というのはもちろんクッキーを入れておく入れ物のことです。アメリカ人にとってクッキーというのは日本で言うとおせんべいみたいなもので、みんなが好きなお菓子のひとつなんですね。どうしてこのタイトルになったかというと、もちろん、ダグは子供の頃からクッキーが大好きということもあります。それから、アルバムのカバーを見てみてくださるといいかもしれません。どこか海辺の町で、地元の人たちが楽しめるライブハウスがあったら、そしてライブハウスの名前が ”クッキー・ジャー” だったら、きっとおいしいベーカリーでいいミュージシャンがいるような気がする。ということからこのタイトルがつきました！ さて、どのような音楽がこのアルバムから聴いていただけるのかといいますと、ポップな感じのR＆B（リズム＆ブルース）そして人に優しい感じの聴きやすいジャズというかんじでしょうか。タイトルが言うように、いろいろなダグの楽しいスタイルの曲が詰まっています。ジャズのイメージが少し変わるかもしれません。Funky, Fun & Friendly Jazz、（ファンキーで、面白く、親しみやすいジャズ）ぜひ、聴いてみていただけると嬉しいです。ここで何曲かについてお紹介させていただきますね。 #1, Because You Love Me: (ビコーズ・ユー・ラブ・ミー)この曲は、ロックテイストジャズです。アルバムの１曲目の曲ですが、始まりからかっこいいです。レリーのクールなギターソロも魅力です！ #2, The Cookie Jar: (ザ・クッキー・ジャー) タイトルの通り焼きたてのおいしいクッキーがいっぱい入っている感じです。ダグの焼くクッキーもおいしですが、この曲もおいしいです。まさに、ファンキー・ジャズというイメージの曲です。 #3, Go Your Own Way: (ゴー・ユア・オウン・ウェイ) メロディーもリズムも軽いポップな感じです。歌詞もダグによるものですが、父親と息子の会話からできています。人生で何か大きな壁にぶつかったり、一大決心をしなければいけない時、いつも自分を信じて自分のやり方でぶつかっていけばいいんだよという素敵なストーリーです。ビリーの生き生きとした経験豊かなボーカルとダグのジョイフルなトランペットとのハーモニーも楽しんでいただけると思います。 #4, Flying: (フライング) この曲はラテンジャズです。ギャリーの迫力あるドラムソロ、ダグのトランペットとローリーのトロンボーンの掛け合いもとてもいいと思います。 #7, The Long Road Home: (ザ・ロング・ロード・ホーム) この曲はニューオーリンズ、イラクやアフリカの災害で大変な経験をされた人々そして多くの戦士たちがそのような場所から自分の家にたどり着いて、はたしてどのようにまた自分本来の生活を取り戻していくのかというところからで来た曲です。実は、歌詞もあるのですが、アルバムには歌はありません。曲だけですが、伝わってくるものがあると思います。 #9, Just Around The Corner: (ジャスト・アラウンド・ザ・コーナー) この曲は、ラブソングですが、人生の大切な曲がり角、いつどこで出会うかもしれない運命の人！誰にもあるすばらしい出会い....。 以上、アルバム１２曲の中より６曲についてご紹介させていただきました。何でもやってしまう欲張りミュージシャンのダグの魅力がすこしても皆様に伝わってくれれば幸いです。アルバムを聴いてくださるとわかっていただけると思いますが、彼ならではのオーケストレーション、シンプルなメロディーですが、とても綿密にアレンジされています。 ぜひ、聴いてみてください！
